Who Should Pay on the First Date?

Posted by:

I was discussing online dating with a friend recently and she explained how she has twice ended an online dating relationship with men due to the fact that they didn’t even offer to pay for her on the first date. These dates weren’t anything expensive either, just coffee. These men had also established that they had well paying jobs. I’m surprised that this happened to her twice in a few months so I think this topic is worth covering.

Guys, the ...

Women Giving Bad Advice About Men

Posted by:

Over at SingleCityGuy.com, there’s a discussion of how women give their female friends awful advice regarding men. I’m not sure that this is a universal problem but I have seen exactly what he’s talking about. I’ve been absolutely flabbergasted by some suggestions women have made when debating dating situations regarding men. The problem, as the article points out, is that women are over-thinking how much thought we’re putting into our decisions.

First Impression: Torchlight

Posted by:

With some extra time over the holiday, I was looking for a new game to play and decided to look into Torchlight. My first impression when researching the game and looking at the screenshots was that it appeared to be a more cartoonish Diablo. Having now played for a few hours, I can say that this impression is correct.

As with my experience with the Diablo series, Torchlight offers a lot of fun with single player dungeon crawling. The ...

Should I Lose Weight Before Dating Online?

Posted by:

Some people think about dating online but put it off because they want to improve something about themselves before they start. I don’t have any statistics but I think it’s safe to assume the number one reason for this is to attempt to lose weight. Do I believe this is a good idea? Should a person lose weight before subjecting themselves to online dating?

In my opinion, the answer is no (with one small exception). Why is waiting a mistake?

  • First, going ...

Hey Society: Geeks And Nerds Don’t Need Your Help!

Posted by:

A Wired article discusses a New York Times article that discusses one professor’s call to ban the words geek and nerd. From the article at NYT:

But David Anderegg, a professor of psychology at Bennington College, says that merely mentioning terms like nerd or geek serves to perpetuate the stereotype. The words are damaging, much like racial epithets, he says, and should be avoided.

This blows my mind because, as both a geek and a nerd, I have ...

Online Dating Horror Stories…Or Just Dating Horror Stories?

Posted by:

You’ll see people complain about how bad their online dates have been. One great site for stories regarding this is Internet Dating Stories (I love the tag line: “The good, the bad, and the OH MY GOD, what were they thinking?!”). Obviously after browsing this site you’ll see there are plenty of bad dates out there originating from the internet. I’ve heard men and women describe bad dates and attribute the entirety of those bad dates to online ...

Wearing Sweat Pants on a First Date

Posted by:

Don’t do this! I was talking about online dating experiences the other day and woman was describing her most recent date. She was explaining why she had no intention of having another date with the man she had met the night before. There were several issues she had taken with the date itself but as we talked I get the feeling this man had ruined his chances in the first few moments of the date. Simply said, he was dressed ...

How to Fix the Free Dating Service Model

Posted by:

Yesterday I discussed why the free online dating services have such problems: men who send massive amounts of spam searching for a woman willing to have sex. The services could cancel these men’s accounts but that really accomplishes nothing – they’ll just open another. It would appear that these free services will simply have to accept being plagued with the spammers…right?

I think not. I believe that these free services could implement a system that would remove all of these ...

Online Dating Advice for the Shy

Posted by:

One of the local newspapers here in Pittsburgh has an advice column which I discovered today. I’m not a fan of these columns because, in most cases, the columnists answer questions as if everything is overly simple. They also come off as overly-confident to me; as if no detail they are unaware of could possibly affect what good advice might consist of. I suppose, though, if you offer advice for a living then it is actually your job to ...

Is Online Dating Worth It?

Posted by:

Recently I started offering dating advice through Yahoo! Answers. If you’re not familiar with Yahoo! Answers, it is a community where you earn points by answering questions and spend points to ask questions. The questions can be anything at all. There are plenty of people asking online dating questions so I check it out every now and again. It’s been interesting seeing what people are curious about and I’ve even been able to help a few ...

First Email Length: Shorter is Better

Posted by:

In my online dating guide, I discussed how first contact should be made. To quickly sum it up: keep the email brief with some type of proof you read the profile.

I’ve covered those points several times in the past so why bring them up again? Primarily because I’ve always been providing second-hand information (that is, bad experiences I have heard about from the women I dated). Today, however, I found a blog post that speaks directly to the ...

Crass Men Hurt Everyone in Online Dating

Posted by:

crass /kras/ – without refinement, delicacy, or sensitivity; gross; obtuse; stupid

I read an article today that got me worked up regarding what some men see as reasonable communication with women. The author, Barbara/Layla, describes a bad online date which isn’t really the problem (we all have those). The problem begins when the man emailed her after the date to let her know he was not interested, in as rude a fashion as his small brain could devise. I’m not ...
