Online Dating and MySpace, Take Two

Posted by:

Today, I found an interesting article about online dating and MySpace. As I have mentioned, I think MySpace is not the best place to try and begin a serious relationship. However, the article does make a few points I had not thought of:

  • The community of MySpace or Facebook creates a little more security in regards to who you are meeting.
  • Specialized groups make finding someone looking to date easier

I think the second point changes my mind slightly on the usefulness ...

Using Online Dating Advice Intelligently

Posted by:

In my last post, I talked briefly about background checks as well as the Safer Online Dating Alliance (SODA). As I mentioned there, I feel that the rules SODA lays out for safer dating are excellent. However, I would like to take a few moments to discuss just a few of the rules in an effort to encourage everyone to be open to the new advice without following it blindly.

8. Spend time getting to know someone online before ...

Online Dating and MySpace

Posted by:

Are people really having success finding love with MySpace? I’m not talking about a purely physical relationships. Based photos I’ve seen, the site is obviously a self-advertising platform for some people. What I am talking about is actual success finding good relationships. I find myself asking this because many sites I have found in my search for good dating articles seem to suggest MySpace as a valid online dating service contender.

This reminds me of the McDonald’s from high school. All ...

Is [Blank] a Good Topic for a First Date Conversations?

Posted by:

A few searches have come to the site questioning whether certain topics are good or not for a first date conversation. The most recent one that comes to mind is “Is profession a good topic for first dates?” In general, I think most topics are fine for first date conversations. Even topics such as politics or religion which are often labeled as “taboo” are actually quite safe on many first dates (see First Date Conversations).

That said, I think you ...

Internet Dating: Profile Views vs. Actual Interest

Posted by:

Once again I am using Google searches that send people to my site for article ideas. This time the search that sent someone my way was: “If a guy views your online profile often are they interested?”

The Short Answer
Wink at him and find out. It may not be called “winking” in the service you use but there will be some kind of method for contacting him without actually having to write an email.

The Long Answer
This is an interesting ...

No Contact After the First Date

Posted by:

This article is based off of a third incoming search “after first date didn’t call cancelled a meeting”. I had originally intended to included this with my previous post on phone calls but soon realized the discussion went well beyond that topic.

If you date online long enough chances are you are going to run into a situation where the person you were speaking to “drops off the face of the earth”. This scenario exists in all types of dating ...

Phone Calls After the First Date

Posted by:

Today, I’ve had some traffic coming in from Google regarding phone calls. In each case, the person was interested in some aspect of phone conversations after the first date. Since the site is light on any phone conversation thought, I decided offer some advice for these searches based on my experiences.

Search: “Rules of dating phone call after first date” from East Hanover, NJ
First, there aren’t any hard and fast rules about anything in dating. I’ve had conversations that worked ...

Social Acceptance of Online Dating

Posted by:

When my wife and I first started dating, we had joked about making up a story on how we met since we were unsure how acceptable online dating would be. We actually tried it out a few times: my favorite was telling friends we met while she was operating a lemonade stand (she had been out of work when we first met). This was not much more than a game between the two of us to see who could be ...

Old Problems in New Packaging

Posted by:

Every now and again I hear a news story talking about the dangers of internet dating such as this one. Now, without question, there are risks with online dating but, as even the briefest scan of newspapers from the past century would prove, date crimes have existed for a very long time. One might even go so far as to say that they have existed for as long as dating has. Now since I found happiness through ...
