Online Dating Scams are More than Requests for Money

Posted by:

Online dating scams are something that are happening all the time. I would say that most weeks I receive emails from someone who is dealing with a scam, sadly it’s often after they’ve already sent money to the scammer.

In the past when I wrote on identifying online dating scammers, I often concentrated on the fact that scammers would ask for money. My advice, which I still believe, is that if someone asks you for money through an online dating ...

You’ve talked to your potential date for days, weeks, or sometimes months on the dating website. Maybe you exchanged numbers and spent time texting each other. Then, you get the invitation to lunch, dinner, or maybe just coffee. You’re a little apprehensive…and rightfully so. You set up your profile in the hopes of meeting that someone special. When Should I Do a Background Check with Online Dating?

Posted by:

background-check

When I was dating online, I didn’t use background checks. I’m definitely not against them; I just personally never felt the need to use them.

However, I do get questions on this from readers and it’s clear to me that many people wouldn’t be comfortable with the idea of dating online without background checks. Because of ...

Online Dating Scams: The 419 Scam

The Romance Scam is often mentioned in relation to the 419 scam (also referred to as the Nigerian scam). Online Dating Scams: The Romance Scam

This article is one in a series that discusses protecting yourself from scams when dating online.

There are many online dating scams out there but I would consider this the “main” scam. This scam involves the scammer posing as a potential love interest with the goal of making money off of their target. It’s amazing how many people are fooled by this one but the bad guys are good at what they do and can be ...

AmericanSingles.com and Fraudulent Charges

Posted by:

In August of 2006, I had my first experience with a fraudulent charge on a credit card. The charge was for service at AmericanSingles.com and was labeled “VISA CHECK CARD PURCHASE SPR*AMERICANSINGLES.COM 888-8543803 CA”. While I had visited AmericanSingles and had used the free services they provide for a short time, I never provided them with a credit card.

I contacted American Singles and they were very easy to work with. They said that the account opened with my credit card ...

However, I would like to take a few moments to discuss just a few of the rules in an effort to encourage everyone to be open to the new advice without following it blindly.

8. Spend time getting to know someone online before ...

A reader contacted me this week with some thoughts on my recent article regarding risks with online dating:

Your post on October 29th titled the Risk of Trusting was a great reminder of how important it is to be cautious. I appreciated your willingness to point out that there is plenty of room for failure and danger in online dating.

I thought you might be interested in a few other resources that people can use to ensure their own safety. My ...

The Risk of Trusting Quickly

Posted by:

While online dating is bringing more and more people dating success everyday, there is another reminder in the news that caution should be exercised. In this story, an Australian man flew to Mali to meet his “bride” only to be taken hostage. While this is horrible, it seems the man from the article isn’t the typical online dater (as the article states, he made a similar trip to Russia in the past also looking for a bride).
