According to this Yahoo! article, some pick-up lines do work. Of course, the article is from Yahoo! India so maybe something is lost across cultures because I would have never thought this was the case. The only time I’ve seen this approach taken was by men who didn’t seem serious about having success with the woman they were approaching. When I’ve seen it used it’s hardly been a step above the stereotypical cat-calling from construction works. From what I’ve seen it’s almost as if the men assume they’ll be rejected so they throw the pick-up line out almost flippantly…perhaps that’s the real reason I’ve seen this fail consistently.

The article points out that going over the top is another good way to fail and lists a few that work better:

Lines such as “Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?”, and “Apart from being beautiful, what do you do for a living?” worked “most of the time”.

Maybe…but it still feels like a pretty long-shot to me. I guess if you can come off as clever or fun, they can’t hurt. Especially if you would have not other opening to talk to the woman otherwise. While the article is interesting I’d recommend you use this approach at your own risk!
