Online Dating Gaining More Global Acceptance

Posted by:

A recent article shows how online dating is gaining ever more acceptance. As someone who has been defending online dating for five years, I think this news is great:

If you spent Valentine’s Day looking for love online then you are among the one in three Internet users who regard the web as a good place to find a relationship, according to a new study.

The BBC World Service global poll showed that 30 percent of web users regard the Internet as a good place to find a boyfriend or girlfriend.

I’ve been able to watch these changes over the last few years and while I believed acceptance was growing. It’s good to see statistics that back it up. As a personal example, when I was dating online I always felt like I had to hide it. Eventually I decide that was rediculous and started sharing my experiences…and it didn’t always go over well. Later when I was dating Kate (who would become my wife) when we explained that we had met online we were actually met with silent stares a few times. I still talk to people about online dating and over the years I’ve found this type of response to slowly disappear. Years ago when I started this blog talking about online dating was often met with confusion or discomfort but today it’s met with interest and lots of questions (especially from singles).

I believe this will only continue to improve. Obviously I believe that online dating services are the best place to meet singles online. However people are also meeting on Twitter, Facebook, World of Warcraft and all other types of ways that all rely on the internet. When my youngest sister is an adult, she’ll not even be able to remember a day when online dating wasn’t an option. With any luck, those lonely souls out there who refuse to try internet dating will slowly come around as it continues to gain popularity.
