Online Dating What?

Published on December 20, 2007

I’ve been receiving a healthy amount of traffic to my blog posts lately. Surprisingly, very little of that traffic ends up viewing my online dating guide. I had anticipated that people would find my site through the individual posts but end up reading the dating guide. I looked into the statistics to try to understand where most of my traffic is coming from and, using that, discover what readers are actually interested in. I categorized as many of the searches as I could into broad categories. The remainder of searches are for things I found difficult to categorize such as “email stalker ideas dating”. (Um…what?!)

Search Categories
28% Funny Profiles
18% Dating Profiles
16% First Dates
10% Dating Statistics
8% First Emails
6% Phone Conversations
4% Profile Headings
3% Winks

Unfortunately, much of my traffic is coming in for my article on Funny Dating Profiles. I say this is unfortunate because many people who are looking to create a funny profile aren’t thrilled to read advice suggesting that they are wasting their time (around 50% immediately leave to continue their search for scripted humor elsewhere).

For all the other searches, I have to assume one of two things is happening:

  1. People realize there is a dating guide but are only interested in their particular topic.
  2. The online dating guide visibility is poor (that is, people might be interested but don’t realize it is there).

There is nothing wrong with the first scenario. However, I am bothered by the idea of the second. How am I suppose to dramatically change the lives of my readers if they never even know a dating guide exists?! Seriously though, I am curiuos what my readers think. Is it clear that there is an online dating guide and is it easy to find? Also, being color-blind I wonder if the Online Dating Guide image on the right stands out enough. If people are visiting without ever realizing there was a guide in the first place, I would like to fix that. If you have any thoughts on the visibility of my dating guide, please drop me a line.
